Hanfu vs Qipao: Two Very Different Chinese Dresses
Many Westerners assume the qipao (cheongsam) is "the" Chinese dress. In fact, Hanfu and qipao are almost entirely different garment traditions separated by about two thousand years. Here's how to tell them apart.
The Quick Answer
Hanfu is the loose, layered, flowing traditional dress of the Han people, worn from ancient times through the Ming dynasty ā think cross-collars, wide sleeves, and sashes. The qipao is a form-fitting, 20th-century dress developed in Shanghai and influenced by the Manchu (Qing-era) robe, worn with a figure-hugging slit and Chinese frog-button closure. Same country, different eras, different bodies.

Why People Confuse Them
Both are Chinese, both silky, both associated with cultural identity for outsiders. But the qipao is a product of the 20th century the Republic of China era, quickly associated with old Shang movie stars. It represents a more modern, urban, Western-influenced Chinese femininity. Hanfu represents the broader ancient tradition. They share almost nothing structurally: qipao is tailored skin-tight and buttoned; Hanfu is loose, wrapped, and layered.
Cheongsam vs Qipao
"Cheongsam" and "qipao" are the same garment. Cheongsam is the Cantonese pronunciation, exported via Hong Kong and the Overseas community to the West; qipao is the Mandarin term (literally "banner gown," a reference to the Manchu banners). See our Hanfu vs Cheongsam page.
