Where to Rent
Rental shops cluster around Yongningmen (South Gate) on the City Wall and around Big Wild Goose Pagoda square. These are shop districts, not single stores — prices and quality vary by 20–30%, so walk a couple of blocks and compare before committing.
Shops near the South Gate tend to have English-speaking staff and bigger catalogs; the Wild Goose Pagoda cluster is more convenient if your photos are all in that area. Both do styling on-site, which takes 30–60 minutes.
Best Spots for Hanfu Photos
- City Wall at sunset — arrive by 16:30–17:00. Golden light against grey brick, with the old city on one side and modern Xi'an on the other. Corner towers are the best framing.
- Tang Paradise — Tang-dynasty gardens made for big-sleeve silhouettes. Mid-morning for soft light, or evening for lanterns.
- Big Wild Goose Pagoda — the classic pagoda + reflection pool shot. Early morning, before crowds.
- Grand Tang Mall at night — the giant lantern-and-light display is unforgettable in Hanfu. Go after 19:00.
- Shaanxi History Museum (outside) — clean architectural lines; free backdrop near the rental district.

3-Day Xi'an Hanfu Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival & Rental Fitting
Arrive in the afternoon and head to the rental district near Yongningmen. Browse 3–4 shops to compare styles and prices. Get fitted — the shop handles sizing and hairstyling (30–60 minutes). Book a photographer for tomorrow if you want one: 400–800 RMB for a 2-hour session.
Day 2 — City Wall & Tang Paradise
Morning: arrive at the City Wall (Yongningmen entrance) by 8:30 AM. Walk or cycle the wall in Hanfu — corner towers are the best photos. Afternoon: Tang Paradise gardens for Tang-dynasty backdrops. Evening: the Grand Tang Mall light show, still in Hanfu. Allow 2–3 hours total for makeup touch-ups at the rental shop.
Day 3 — Big Wild Goose Pagoda & Departure
Morning: Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the reflection pool — the classic shot. Afternoon: return the rental (most are 24-hour) and explore the Muslim Quarter for street food. Total for 3 days including rental, styling, and photography: roughly 800–1,500 RMB (~$110–210 USD) per person.
Practical Notes
- Booking — walk-ins are fine outside peak weekends; book 1–2 days ahead in spring/autumn.
- Passport — bring it; most shops need it as ID for the deposit.
- Return time — most rentals are 24 hours from pickup; late returns cost a half-day fee.
- Language — South Gate shops usually have English speakers; otherwise use a translation app.
- Collar rule — cross right over left. See How to Wear Hanfu.
