Where to Rent
The biggest cluster is outside the Forbidden City's west gate (Jingshan West Street) and near Tiananmen. Rent here, walk through the palace, and return on your way out. A second cluster sits around the Summer Palace's East Gate.
Beijing pricing runs slightly higher than Xi'an because of palace-demand and higher-quality fabric stock. Ming-dynasty styles with bright red and gold accents dominate — they photograph best against palace walls.
Best Spots for Hanfu Photos
- Forbidden City — the pinnacle. Red walls, marble bridges, gold-tiled roofs. Mid-morning light from the east is best; book the palace entry ticket 1–2 weeks ahead online.
- Jingshan Park — the hill behind the Forbidden City. From the top you get the full palace panorama — a rare aerial backdrop in Hanfu.
- Summer Palace — Long Corridor and the lakefront (Kunming Lake). Softer, more garden-like than the palace; lovely in autumn.
- Temple of Heaven — the triple-tier blue roof is iconic. Early morning before crowds.
- Snow days (winter) — the Forbidden City's red walls against fresh snow is the single most requested Hanfu shot in Beijing. Watch the forecast and book rental the night before.

When to Go
Autumn (October–November) is the classic choice: crisp air, golden ginkgo, and t-shirt-and-Hanfu weather. Winter snow is the special one — red walls, white snow, and near-empty courtyards transform the Forbidden City into the most dramatic Hanfu backdrop in China. Rentals stay open all winter.
Spring (April–May) is pleasant but busy with domestic tour groups; book palace tickets a week ahead. Summer is hot and humid, but very early mornings still work well. If snow is on the forecast, book rental the night before — the demand spike on snow days is real.
Signature Experience
Time the snow. Beijing's most famous Hanfu photograph is simple: a figure in Ming-style red-and-gold robes standing in a Forbidden City courtyard while snow falls against vermilion walls. Forecast days are announced a few days out. Book your rental the night before, get to the palace for the 8:30 first entry, and shoot before the snow gets trodden into slush — you'll have the courtyard largely to yourself for the first 30 minutes.
